Wind farms : Grant Shapps is criticised for his “absurd” claims.
Friends of the Earth said this claim was “absurd”, while Greenpeace said that onshore wind was “flourishing”.
The government is facing a rebellion from some of its own MPs who want to lift the effective ban on new onshore wind turbines in England.
Mr Shapps said that onshore wind energy should be part of the mix.
But he added that there should be local support for any new wind turbine.
Responding to calls from Labour in the Commons for him to clarify his position, Mr Shapps told MPs: “These turbines are now so big they can’t even be built on land. They are so big that the turbines could not be transported by road. They have to be installed offshore.”
